The issue of drug abuse has already been with us for a very long time. Knowing the adverse effects of drug abuse in the society’s culture and general well-being, many measures have been proposed and implemented by experts in order to reduce and relieve, if not totally eradicate these effects. One such measure is drug prevention education. In view of the urgent need, the Sto. NiÑo Elementary School implemented the National Drug Education Program (NDEP) which aims to prevent drug abuse among students through the development of desirable values, attitudes and practices.
The teaching force of Sto. Niño Elementary School, Bunawan District had a whole day parents’ and students’ Symposium with the theme, “People first, stop stigma and discrimination, strengthen prevention” last November 30, 2023 (Thursday) at Sto. Niño Elementary School, Tibungco, Davao City from 8 A.M.- 12:00 P.M. This is pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No. 124 dated November 26, 2001 entitled Declaring the 3rd Week of November of every year as Drug Abuse prevention and Control (DAPC) Week. The said event will be participated by the Grade 4-6 learners together with their parents.
To start with the program, Master Teacher I ma’am Lilian Olalo gave an inspiring and encouraging message, “if you are not the solution, then try not to be a problem”. Her short opening remark was followed by the introduction of the three guest speakers that was done by the School CADAC/NDEP coordinator of Sto. Niño Elementary School, Jessa M. Rezano. Followed by the Community Dance lead by the Master of Ceremony , ma’am Gadelyn Albarico’ The speaker resource speaker is PMAJ Jake C. Goles of the Philippine National Police he tackled about the different programs of the Philippine National Police including the different Oplans to address different crimes in the country. The 2nd resource speaker is CSSDO officer Mary Ann Abayon. She enumerated the three types of drugs, namely: the medication drugs, the alcohol and cigarette, and the shabu, marijuana, and inhalants. She emphasized unfortunate events and as years passed, the number of drug crimes increased, so they improved it with RA 9165. The speaker also showed some pictures of the effect of illegal drugs in the human body, more specifically to the brain. With his speech, he informed his audience about illegal drugs and persuaded them not to use it.
Further, the event is indeed a success thru the help of the Sto. Niño Elementary School teachers, personnel, resource speakers, facilitators and participants who give their best to work hand and hand that result of the success of the activity.
